Meanwhile in English the word "actual" is used to describe something real or true, in Spanish or German the meaning is different and describes something current, present or up-to-date. Here are some examples:
His friends call him Jo-Jo, but his actual name is John.
Sus amigos le llaman Jo-Jo, pero su nombre verdadero es John.
Seine Freunde nennen ihn Jo-Jo, aber sein richtiger Name ist John.
We were expecting about 50 people for this event, though the actual number was a lot higher.*
En la fiesta esperábamos que llegasen unos 50 personas, sin embargo, llegaron muchos más.
Zu diesem Fest erwarteten wir so um die 50 Personen, aber tatsächlich kamen viel mehr.
*In this case the word-for-word account would be "sin embargo el número actual era mayor" /"die tatsächliche Zahl war viel höher", but my advise is a free translation to keep the sentence fluent.
Now, if you like to translate "the present/current situation", "the current value", etc. then translate it with "actual /"aktuell". For example:
We hope that the current economic situation will improve soon.
Esperemos que la situación económica actual mejore pronto.
Wir hoffen, daß sich die aktuelle Wirtschaftslage bald verbessert.
She started her current job two years ago.
Ella comenzó su trabajo actual hace dos años.
Sie begann in ihrem jetzigen Job vor 2 Jahren.
Note, if you are learning German for an official Certificate, "aktuell" belongs to the vocabulary!
